Sam McManis has worked as a journalist for more than four decades, including 10 years as a sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times (covering the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers, MLB’s Dodgers and NHL’s Kings, as well as the Olympics). He later was an award-winning feature writer for, among other outlets, the San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, Tacoma News-Tribune and the Arizona Daily Sun. He is the author of two books, “Crossing California: A Cultural Topography of a State of Wonder and Weirdness” (2017) and “Running to Glory: An Unlikely Team, a Challenging Season, and Chasing the American Dream” (2019). He is a longtime runner, road and trail, and ran the Boston Marathon twice. He lives and runs in Flagstaff, Ariz., with his wife, Beth, and dogs Spud and Oggie.
