Flagstaff, Coconino and Northland Prep high school distance runners competed Saturday at the Ron Smith Classic at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, and several local runners cracked the top five.
Particularly impressive was Flagstaff High’s Alex Bland, who placed fourth in the boys 3,200 meters with a time of 9:53.23. Bland, a sophomore, was going against upper classman in the race. Not far behind in the 3,200 was Coconino High senior Nicholas Wolfe, seventh in 10:06.58.
Likewise, in the girls 3,200 meters at 12:04.70. Northland Prep’s Jaelyn Weiss cracked the top 10 in ninth at 12:43.50, and Coconino’s Sara McCabe placed 11th at 12:56.06.
Flagstaff’s Haley Johnson was the top local finisher in the girls 1,600 at 5:40.62 (13th), while NPA’s McKenna Marino was 16th in 5:42.99. In the girls 800, Flagstaff’s Baker was the top local, 18th place in 2:37.04.
In the boys 1,600 Coconino’s Laine Davis finished sixth overall in 4:35.79, and Coconino’s Wolfe was 22nd at 4:53.44. In the 800, Coconino’s Davis placed 15th at 2:07.01.
