UPDATED: BAA Mile Results, 4 p.m.
Just one week after battling it out at the USATF 10 Mile Championships in Washington, D.C., Flagstaffians Rachel Smith and Emily Durgin were back at it Saturday morning in the BAA 5K, the opening act for Monday’s Boston Marathon.
This time, Smith finished fifth in 15:25, the second fastest American, and Durgin 10th in 15:39. NAZ Elite’s Mercy Chelangat was 8th in 15:32. McKirdy Trained’s Dani Polerecky placed 12th in 15:42, followed by Flagstaff’s Kim Conley in 16th at 16:12.
For the men, Dark Sky’s Eduardo Herrera finished third in his first race of the season, at 13:39, and teammate Matt Wilkinson placed sixth in 13:47, a second ahead of NAZ Elite’s Alex Masai at 13:48.
In the BAA Mile, Naz Elite’s Krissy Gear defended her title. Gear led at the halfway point, dipped to third after 1,200 meters but outkicked the field to win in 4:42.42. In the men’s mile, Dark Sky’s Kasey Knevelbaard placed eighth in 4:13:40, and teammate Ben Veatch was 12th at 4:14.81.
