Locals in weekend trail races:
- Flagstaff’s Bronson Fiore, a senior at NAU, navigated the granite dells around Watson Lake to finish third in the Whiskey Basin 91K in Prescott on Saturday in 8 hours 59 minutes 23 seconds. Fiore was 12 minutes behind second place finisher Sam Vossler of Parks. Aravaipa’s Nick Coury was the winner in 7:41:32. Flag’s Nicky Jurgens, 47, placed 29th overall and the fourth woman in 12:55:47.
In the Whiskey Basin 33K, Flagstaffians finished fifth through seventh: Zach Walberer, 2:51:55, Meredith Merkey (second woman), 3:01:02; Spencer Jackman, 3:01:59.
And in the half marathon, Flagstaff’s Bridger Hershey, a former high school football star, won in 1:44:27. The third woman was 16-year-old Coconino High cross country runner Mary McGinlay in 2:04:55.
- At the Zion 50K, 2023 Cocodona 250 winner Sarah Ostaszewski went down in distance to the 50K and finished 10th overall (fourth female) in 5:04:15.
- At the Gorge Waterfalls 30K, Flagstaff’s Eric Hamel laced fourth in 2:07:58. In the Gorge 100K, Flag’s Georgia Porter was the fourth woman in 10:40:40, and Caleb Schiff was25th in 11:22:41.
