Friday Quick Hits: Young, Sahlman on Bowerman Watch List, Scheduled to Race at Oxy Saturday; NAZ Elite Community Runs; How to Follow Prep State Meets

Friday Quick Hits:

  • The Bowerman Awards, akin to the Hesiman Trophy for collegiate track and field, named its “watch list” recently, and NAU’s Nico Young and Colin Sahlman made the cut.

Young has been on the list all along, after setting the NCAA record and getting the Olympic standard in the 10,000 meters at The Ten in March. Sahlman earned a spot with his 1,500 meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational, posting the second fastest time in NCAA history and coming just shy of the Olympic standard.

Speaking of which, both Sahlman and Young are entered in a special four-man heat of the 1,500 on Saturday at Occidental College. The other two: pros Craig Engels and Abdihamid Nur. The speculation is that the race is set up as an Olympic standard attempt for Sahlman, but Young may also be trying for the standard.

Young and Sahlman also are on the start lists for the men’s 5,000 meters. (The Big Sky Conference meet is slated for next weekend in Bozeman, Mont., so this may be their last shot at a time-trial style race.

NAU women’s middle distance star Maggi Congdon also on the Oxy start list, along with Flagstaff pros Niiki Hiltz and Elly Henes in the women’s 1,500. If Congdon runs, it’ll be her first outdoor race after a stellar indoor season. Henes also is scheduled to run in the fast heat of the women’s 5,000.

  • Hoka NAZ Elite will resume its Friday afternoon community runs starting, well, this afternoon at 4 p.m. at its facility on Humphreys (the Basha’s shopping center). For more info, go here.

Speaking of NAZ Elite, Stephanie Bruce and Wesley Kiptoo will be racing the Pittsburgh Half Marathon on Sunday.
