NAU Regional Declarations: Young 5K Only; Sahlman 1,500; Congdon 1,500; Reiss 5K

As expected, Nico Young will compete only in the NCAA West Outdoor Regionals 5,000 meters on Feb. 24-5 at the University of Arkansas, opting to scratch from the 1,500 meters and 800 meters. He did not qualify in the 10,000 meters, arguably Young’s best event, because The Ten back in March was not a sanctioned race for qualification.

Expect Young to not run another 10,000 meters until the Olympic Trials in late June.

Speaking of the Olympic Trials, teammate Colin Sahlman opted out of the 800 meters in the regionals and will compete in the 1,500 meters — his best event and one in which he has the trials standard and almost captured the Olympic standard.

Meanwhile, among NAU women, Annika Reiss heads a group of nine Lumberjacks who will compete in the 5,000 meters. Reiss has the sixth-fastest time going in the west. Reiss scratched from the 1,500. Maggi Congdon will compete in the 1,500 meters after scratching in the 800.

Other NAU distance members who’ll compete in the regionals: 5K men: Cael Grotenhuis, Brodey Hasty, Aaron Las Heras, Kang Nyoak, Zack Munson and Caleb Easton; Men 1,500: Easton and Ford Washburn; Women’s 5K: Gracelyn Larkin, Bryn Morley, Nikita Moore, Ali Upshaw, Ava Mitchell, Anna Fenske, Ruby Smee and Megan Van Pelt; Women’s 1,500: Nikita Moore; Women’s 800: Odessa Zentz.
