What a July 4th Troika: Downtown Mile, 4 on the 4th, Beer Mile

The annual Flagstaff Downtown Mile, which is likely to exceed 1,000 participants this year, isn’t the only running event on Thursday. (By the way, it’s not too late to enter the mile, sponsored by Run Flagstaff.)

About a half an hour after the finish of the mile races downtown, you can head to Thorpe Park (by the iconic flagpole) for the annual Randy Wilson Memorial 4 on the 4th. This is a fun run (8:15 a.m.) along the Karen Cooper section of the FUTS, though many of us geezers miss the fact that it’s no longer an age-handicapped race. (Who can forget the finish in 2021, when Olympic Marathon Trials runner Craig Hunt had to sprint to beat 60-something speedster John Bogen?) In any event, enjoy the laidback four-mile trot hosted by running maven Neil Weintraub and the Northern Arizona Trail Runners Assn. Bring canned food to help out the food bank.

Then, at noon at Thorpe Park, that wacky Ruairi Moynihan of the Trailgangstaz, is holding the Flagstaff Beer Mile, benefitting Wild Arizona.

And after that, we expect all of you to go on a 10-mile cooldown run.

Or not.
