From Winslow to Window Rock, Gallup to Phoenix — and, of course, close to home in Flagstaff — Coconino Community College has announced 14 signings for the 2024 cross country season.
The Comets, whose men’s team finished 10th in the NJCAA nationals in 2023 and whose women placed fourth in nationals in 2022, drew from around Northern Arizona and dipping into New Mexico and greter Phoenix for recruits.
“I’m proud of the recruiting our coaching staff has accomplished this year, but the job isn’t done yet,” Comets coach Craig Hunt said in a press release. “We hope to add a few more athletes to our roster throughout the summer and are always looking for new prospects.”
The Flagstaff signees are:
— Troy Baker, a 2023 Flagstaff High grad whose personal bests are 10:16 in the 3,200 meters and 16:39 for 5K in cross country.
— Zach Biah, a 2024 Flagstaff High grad with a 17:53 cross country PR.
— Peyton Yazzie, a 2018 Coconino High grad who ran on the cross country team.
Perhaps the top recruit is Jace Coochwikvia of Winslow High. He has track times of 4:39 in the 1,600 meters and 10:19 in the 3,200 meters and ran a personal best of 17:21 for 5K at the AIA D3 State Cross Country Championships.
