NAU Gets Big Cross Country Addition, Florida State’s Mullarkey, as Grad Transfer

NAU posted on social media accounts on Monday that the Lumberjacks have added Florida State graduate transfer David Mullarkey to its cross country and track and field roster. Its sports information office later confirmed the signing.

Mullarkey, from Great Britain, finished 40th in last fall’s NCAA cross-country nationals in 29:50. That would’ve made Mullarkey the sixth runner on NAU, but Drew Bosley, Nico Young, Aaron Las Heras and Brodey Hasty now have graduated.

The 24-year-old fifth-year senior has some speedy times. In last spring’s NCAA Outdoor National Championships 5,000 meters, Mullarkey finished 18th in 14:05.77, four spots behind Hasty and one spot ahead of Oklahoma State’s Alex Maier. Mullarkey’s personal best in the 5K is 13:28.43, set last April at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford. He also has a 7:42.89 PR in the indoor 3,000 meters.

Mullarkey figures to be a factor for NAU’s men’s cross country team, looking to rebuild after the loss of Young, Bosley and others. Santiago Prosser (21st) and Corey Gorgas (62nd) return from last season’s top 7 in the nationals, though Colin Sahlman, Kang Nyoak, Cale Grotenhuis and several other younger returners figure to make the Lumberjacks vie for the podium.

The women’s team last winter added its own Florida State grad transfer, Alyson Churchill, who redshirted during outdoor track but qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 5,000 and 10,000 while running unattached.

Mullarkey is only the third men’s cross country runner NAU has added from the transfer portal — the others being George Kusche from Nebraska and Las Heras from Wake Forest.

Here’s a link to Mullarkey’s full race results.
