The final day of the NCAA West Regionals at the University of Arkansas began with an NAU veteran, Maggi Congdon, and a freshman, Karrie Baloga, running themselves into the nationals.
And the night ended with senior Annika Reiss earning an automatic qualifying in the 5,000 meters, finishing third in her heat in 15:57.81 after getting boxed in for most of the race. Teammate Gracelyn Larkin, who was tripped in the final two laps, recovered to qualify for the nationals on time in 16:03.86.
In all, four NAU women will be heading to Eugene, Ore., in two weeks for the NCAA Championships.
Congdon qualified by finishing fourth in her heat in a season’s best 4:18.05. Baloga, the transfer from the University of Colorado, placed third overall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, second in her heat, at 10:00.72.
Other Lumberjack women who competed, but failed to advance, were Keira Moore in the 1,500, Ava Mitchell, Nikita Moore, Ali Upshaw and Bryn Morley in the 5,000 meters.
