Weekend race results:
— In the Golden Trail World Series finale in Locarno, Switzerland, pro runner Rachel Tomajczyk of Williams finished 10th on Saturday. Fellow American Lauren Gregory finished second overall.
Last weekend, in the “prologue,” the vertical race, Tomajczyk placed 12th. She finished the entire series in 13th place.
— Flagstaff’s intrepid ultra runner Pete Mortimer, still recovering from a harrowing Tour de Geants experience last month, bounced back nicely on Saturday to win the Man Against Horse 50 Mile Race in Prescott.
Mortimer covered the challenging course in 7 hours 35 minutes 33 second, easily besting second place finisher Stephanie Rosebaugh of Prescott (9:12:01). Third place went to Flagstaff’s Tim Briggs in 9:31:39.
More importantly, Mortimer beat the top horse (ridden by Prescott’s Jennifer Herbert) by 21 minutes. It was the fourth victory (versus other humans) and his third beating both humans and horses.
— Saturday in Riverside, the Coconino Community College cross country teams faced off against NCAA Division 1 schools (plus the tough Mesa Community College team) and had a rough outing.
The Comets men finished last of 20 teams in a race won by the University of Arizona. The women finished 23rd out of 24 teams, as San Diego State took the victory.
Individually, Cian Davis was Coconino’s top woman, placing 81st in 24:34 over the 6K course. The Comets’ top male finisher was Luca Onyejiaka in 84th place in 25:%1 over 8K.
This was just a tune-up for Coconino. It competes in the NJCCAA Region 1 meet on Friday at Glendale Heroes Park for a bid to the nationals on Nov. 9.
