Thursday night’s Scottsdale Distance Festival gave local runners in longer events a chance to garner the spotlight without having to sit through heat-upon-heat of 200-meter races.
And the local Flagstaff runners came through. Here are the highlights:
Girls 3,200 Meters: Basis Flagstaff senior Emily Mullaney finished second with a PR of 11:32.93, four seconds behind winner Taryn Janssen of Glendale Prep. Junior Olivia Baker of Flagstaff High finished fifth in 11:46.53, and Basis Flagstaff’s Sammy Mullaney, a sophomore, was sixth a 12:04.84.
Boys 1,600 Meters: Flagstaff High’s Alex Bland continued his impressive sophomore season by placing fourth in 4:18.46, while teammate Elijah Talkalai, also a sophomore, finished fifth in 4:22.87.
Boys 3,200 Meters: It was a Coconino High showdown between Laine Davis (eighth) in 9:48.28 and Nicholas Wolfe (ninth) in 9:48.65.
Girls 1,600 Meters: Flagstaff High sophomore Taylor Biggambler was the only local in the top 10, finishing ninth in 5:26.92.
Boys 800 Meters: Flag High’s Talkalai placed eighth in 2:00.11.
Girls 800: Flag High’s McKenna Maloney finished second in 2:20.43, while Basis Flagstaff’s Jasmine Hall was seventh in 2:26. 22.
