Impressive performances by three Flagstaff-area high schools dotted the track at the Sedona Red Rock Invitational on Saturday. Plus, Northland Prep traveled to Phoenix, and two unattached preps went to San Diego for a college meet.
Here’s a rundown:
- In the girls 800 meters at Sedona, Basis sophomore Jasmine Hall (yes, Sara and Ryan’s daughter) ran a PR of 2:26.10 to beat out teammate Emily Mullaney (2:31) and Flagstaff High’s Olivia Baker (2:31.40).
- Mullaney, a senior, came back in the 1,600 meters to notch the victory in 5:24.20, while Flagstaff’s McKenna Maloney (5:26.50) and Baker (5:31.90) finished second and third, respectively.
- In the girls 3,200 meters, Flagstaff Haley Johnson dominated in 12:17.60, while Basis’ Hall second in 12:43.50.
- The boys 800 meters was a showdown between two Coconino High runners, with Clayton Rhoton (1:59.50) beating Nicvholas Wolfe (2:04.20).
- Flagstaff’s Alex Bland (pictured above) continued his fine running this season by winning the 1,600 meters in 4:34.70, besting Coconino’s Laine Davis (4:38.40).
- And in the boys 3,200 meters, Flagstaff’s Elijah Talkalai, a sophomore, won by 15 seconds in 10:05.80.
- Northland Prep participated in the Pioneer Invitational in Phoenix. Highlights included Henry Wilder finishing 20th in the 800 meters at 2:10.66; Grant Berger 33rd in the 1,600 meters at 5:20.45, Garrett Short 23rd in the 3,200 meters at 11:26.32. For the girls, Abby Short finished 13th in the 1,600 meters at 5:47.91.
- Unattached local athletes who formerly ran for Northland Prep participated in a college meet, the UC San Diego Triton Invite. Senior Jack Flugstad ran a PR in the 1,500 meters at 4:12, which equates to 4:28 for 1,600 meters. And Emilio Haubert ran a four-second PR in the 800 meters at 2:08.
