On your marks …
Though it seems that high school cross country season just ended — OK, not really, but the memories linger — our prep distance runners are gearing up for a busy spring of (mostly) outdoor track.
According to the schedules found on Arizona Mile Split (see screenshots below), at lest three of the schools will compete in the annual indoor NPA Skydome Classic on March 9 at, obviously, the Skydome in Flagstaff. Coconino High, however, is scheduled to open its season tomorrow (Feb. 24) at the Thunder Invite at Desert Vista High in Phoenix.
A select few of local distance runners got an early jump on the season by participating, unattached, in several indoor meets hosted by NAU.
Flagstaff High’s Taylor Biggambler, a cross-country star as a sophomore, faced some college competition (granted, in the slower of the two heats) and logged some impressive off-season times. On Jan. 12, at the Skydome, Biggambler finished eighth in the 1 Mile with a time of 5:40. She returned on Feb. 2 and lowered her time to 5:36.75 to finish third in her heat.
Northland Prep’s Jack Flugstad faced off against collegiate runners in the 800 meters and logged a 2:04.43 to finish ninth.
