Biya Simbassa, the Flagstaff-based runner who’s part of Ryan Hall’s training group, was the top local finisher in Saturday’s Beach to Beacon 10K in Maine. Simbassa finished fourth in 28:34, one spot ahead of Hoka NAZ Elite’s Futsum Zienasellaissie in 28:41. The men’s race was won by Ethiopia’s Tadese Worku in 28:12.
In the women’s race, the two Flagstaff-based runners, Emily Durgin (32:31) and Rachel Smith (32:35), placed fifth and sixth overall, behind champion Faith Chepkoech in 32:05.
Friday night at the Sir Walter Raleigh Mile in North Carolina, Under Armour Dark Sky Distance’s Kasey Knevelbaard (3:53.64) and Jack Anstey (3:53.84) placed sixth and sventh, respectively. Waleed Suliman won in 3:51.89.
NAZ Elite’s Abby Nichols, who won last year’s Sir Walter Mile, was unable to defend her title, finishing seventh in 4:30.59. Puma’s Dorcas Ewoi edged Sage Hurta-Klecker for the win.
Switching to community races, the Machine Solutions Run For Kids 10K trail race at Fort Tuthill County Park was won by two Flagstaffians — former elite marathoner Nick Arciniaga (men, 41:05) and local veterinarian Tereza Rumfola (women, 50:14).
The top three men were are masters runners (40-plus), with Will Drexler (41:58) and Mark Loeffler (42:36) taking second and third. For the women, Flagstaff’s Sara Risner-Rumohr placed second in 51:37 and Flag’s Elsa Erling was third in 52:14.
