Wednesday Quick Hits: 8 Flagstaff Pros Get Big USATF Grants; Kostelnick 19th at Badwater 135; NAZ Elite Hosting Hopi Fundraiser

Quick hits for a Wednesday:

— Eight Flagstaff-based professional runners have been named recipients of the USATF Foundation 2024 class of Stephen A. Schwarzman grants.

Among the 65 award winners are: $30,000 grant — Nikki Hiltz, Hobbs Kessler, Woody Kincaid, Abdihamid Nur, Matt Wilkinson and Nico Young; $15,000 grant — Vince Ciattei, Krissy Gear.

This funding, according to a USATF press release, will help athletes cover expenses such as equipment, coaching, travel, medical costs, recovery tools, and other essential needs. Schwarzman is one of track and field’s biggest donors, having awarded in excess of $14 million in grants.

— Flagstaff ultra runner Pete Kostelnick, a past winner of the extremely hot and extremely grueling Badwater 135 Ultra in Death Valley, gave it another try on Tuesday and Wednesday and finished 19th in 35 hours 28 minutes 55 seconds.

Kostelnick, known for his fast known times across America, hovered in the top 10 for most the race, getting as high as fourth at one point before falling back.

Last month, in Alaska, Kostelnick set the course record at the Denali 135.

— Hoka NAZ Elite is hosting its annual trivia night at the Flagstaff Elks Lodge on Aug. 1, with all proceeds going to the Hopi High School Cross Country team.

The event — $200 a table — is open to anyone, and you are likely to be sitting near Olympic medalists, NCAA title holders and just regular running folk.
