Busy weekend. Let’s do a brief, non-comprehensive, rundown featuring Flagstaffians:
London Marathon: NAU alum Brian Shrader, who now lives and trains in the Boston area, finished 10th among the men at 2:10:50, the top American. For a while there, Shrader was flirting with sub-2:08 pace, which would have been the Olympic standard and unlocked the third U.S. spot for Leonard Korir. Hoke NAZ Elite’s Alice Wright ran with the leaders early but faded badly in the final 2K and was the 15th woman at 2:40:51.
Mad City 50K: Flagstaff’s Lindsay Prescott, running her first ultra marathon and overcoming a series of debilitating injuries, won the Mad City 50K in 3:21:35 and, as a result, is in line to be selected to represent the U.S. in the 50K road championships. Ian Torrence finished 12th in the same race at 3:41:59.
Vintage Runs in Cottonwood: Flagstaff’s Spencer Busby won the Vintage half marathon in 1:23:57, beating Erik Salas by two and a half minutes. In the 10K, Sedona’s Michael De Koning logged a nine-second win over Baron Smith at 41:40, while Flagstaff’s ageless (OK, 65 years old) John Bogen placed third overall at 46:00. Grace Daly was the top woman at 50:39.
Winslow Invitational: Flagstaff High’s Alex Bland, only a sophomore, won the 3,200 meters at Friday’s Winslow Invitational at 9:51.80, with teammate Elijah Talkalai placing sixth (10:19.70). In the girls 3,200, Flag sophomore Taylor Biggambler won by 20 seconds with a time of 12:20.80. Full results here.
Mingus Invitational: Basis Flagstaff, Coconino and Northland Prep went to Mingus, and one of the highlights of the day for local runners was the girls 1,600 meters, in which Basis senior Emily Mullaney finished first in 5:43.14 and sister Sammy Mullaney was third at 5:49.47. Other girls highlights: Coconino’s Addison Stenman was third in the 3,200 in 12:57.22, and Basis’ Jasmine Hall was second in the 800 meters at 2:31.59. Two noteworthy boys results: In the 800 meters, Coconino’s Nicholas Wolfe placed second at 2:02.31, and Basis’ Ben Hutchinson (4:49.60) was second in the 1,600. Full results here.
Mesa Community College Invitational: Several Northland Prep high school students, running unattached, posted impressive times. Sophomore Emilio Haubert posted a hugh PR in the 800 meters, running 2:06, which would have placed him in the top five on NPA’s all-time list. Senior Deia Mulligan ran 5:31 for the 1,500 meters, which translates to 5:52 for a high school 1,600.
